About the Inn & the Island

As a family-owned inn, Belle Crest Inn prides itself on personalized service and a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring every guest feels at home. Our cozy accommodations are designed for relaxation, making it the perfect getaway to explore Shelter Island, the North Fork and the South Fork of Eastern Long Island. Let us help you create cherished memories during your stay. We have extensive knowledge of local events, attractions, and dining options. Our commitment to enhancing your experience means providing personalized recommendations to ensure your stay at Belle Crest Inn is truly memorable.

The Belle Crest Inn was built as a guest house in the early 20th Century. The late Herb and Yvonne Loinig purchased the property in the early 1980s and worked tirelessly to bring it back to its guest house beginnings. With Herb's extensive hospitality background having studied, worked and cooked in premier resort locations throughout Europe, across the Seven Seas, and eventually to New York at the Windows on the World (the restaurant and banquet facility that stood atop the World Trade Center), brought his European charisma to all that he did. Yvonne, a Registered School Nurse-Teacher by day and artisan by nights and weekends, added her creative eye to the decor and style of the Inn. Now the torch has been passed to their daughter Aimee and her husband Matt and three young children to carry on the legacy of providing a personalized and enjoyable retreat on Shelter Island.

Shelter Island is uniquely situated between the North and South forks of Eastern Long Island. The South Fork is home to the Hamptons/Montauk and the North Fork is known as "Long Island Wine Country." There are two Ferry services that provide access to the Island, North Ferry from Greenport and South Ferry from Sag Harbor/North Haven. The ferry runs daily from 6am to 12 midnight year-round. No reservations are required but cash is required for payment. The Island is around 8,000 acres in size and nearly one-third of the island is owned by The Nature Conservancy. Shelter Island is an outdoor person's dream with countless activities including biking, boating, hiking, swimming, golfing, tennis, pickleball, and paddle boarding to name a few. There's also lots for history lovers, exercise enthusiasts and those who enjoy antiquing. Trust us, there is something for everyone to enjoy!
